MODERN COLLECTIVE PREMIER

There were about 100 people that packed our parking lot last night. They all showed up for the Hawaii premier of Modern Collective. Those that arrived early got free prizes provided by the movie sponsors. The evening was perfect to do an outdoor event like this. People brought their beach chairs and blankets, got comfy in the parking lot and were ready to enjoy this FREE event.

This movie was the latest release from Poor Specimen's Kai Neville.
For those of you who don't know who Kai is...he's fast been making a name for himself as the next generation Taylor Steele. He's worked under Taylor for years and is now making his own movies. Kai's been able to capture the next generation of surfers, similar to what Taylor has done with the Kelly Slater/Shane Dorian Momentum era, Kai's doing with the Dane Reynolds/Jordy Smith next generation.

This movie is a look at what high performance surfing is today and where it's going. Dane, Jordy, Dusty Payne, Mitch Coleburn, Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol star in Modern Collective. If you missed the premier, you missed one of the best movies to come out in a while. I guarantee you will be blown away at what these guys are doing on waves now.

The dvd will be released in about 2 weeks, so they say.
We have it playing in shop right now, and we are taking pre-orders if you would like to get this film as soon as it hits the shelves.

Our food drive with the Hawaii Food Bank was held this past weekend. We would like to say Thank You to all that donated, and to all the volunteers that came down to help out.
We would also say Thank You to Jim and the crew at Rainbow Drive Inn for helping out and providing free chili bowls to everyone that donated either food or money to the Hawaii Food Bank.
We collected 6 boxes of food with an estimated weight of 180 pounds and $134 in 4 hours.

C4 SUP DEMO DAY

Really good vibe at the Coffee house

This Morning after a quick surf session, I went to a coffee house and grab a drink to go. As I stepped outside someone that was sitting, lost all of the paper that was in his folder due to a gust of wind. Everyone that was their (8-12 people) got out of their seats and helped this guy gather his paper work for him, some guy even went under a car. It made me feel good that we live in a place that helps each other out... Might seem like a small deed but I thought it was something really awesome to see and feel the vibe.

Dick Brewer

We were finally able to work on the Longboards with Dick Brewer.
The blanks were sent to the glassers , should be done in about three weeks.
I'm hoping the Lams will be ready in time!!

It was an honor to work with Dick Brewer.
The Hawaiian South Shore Exclusive Shapes is
one of the most exciting projects we have done to date.

The two models the Dick shaped this time around were the High Performance Nose Rider and the Dick Brewer Classic Longboard.

High performance Nose Rider - "The Skinny Pig" model We came up with this name because this more is made to catch waves like a fat pig but it will move like a Skinny young athletic pig "if their is such a pig".

I asked Dick Brewer if he would build a board that has a low entry rocker with a high tail rocker. So the rider can take off on the wave fast and early, and be able to maneuver the board like like a shortboard. He commented that he built something similar for one of his team riders and its worked really good.
We are having the board glassed with 6x4 on the deck with 6 on the bottom, the Color will be an all Navy Tint with White and red pins on the deck, cant wait to check it out.

This is the blank he choose. He took the blank and turn the board around
and used the nose of the board for the tail, so what he did was reverse
the rocker of the board, that gave the board a nice kick on the tail and
a low entry rocker.

The Classic Brewer Longboard - I asked for something that has a lot of glide and rides smooth as silk. The Competed Board will be exciting to see...I've only seen the shaped blank but the board , according to Dick is similar to the Pipeliner nose rounded , but with that distinct little point. The bottom will be fairly flat and goes into a Vee to the tail with a squash tail. I'm getting the board glassed with Volan rails , Volan deck patch ,Dark wooden tail block , Single fin, and the Color is a Red Pigment on the Rail and bottom with a Navy Pinline on the deck..Man this one is going to look good!!!!

Cole - Trunk Board sizes 5'2 - 5'8

Today we recieved our box of the Trunk Board (AKA BD3) Which is a short,stubby design, features a very low entry rocker, with a moderate amount of tail rocker. The deep "bonzer" style concave that runs full length from the nose, through the fins, and out the tail. This full-length concave allows water to flow easily through the bottom of the board drastically reducing drag, as well as further lowering the entry rocker. Even though it is short, the low entry rocker combined with this full length concave allow this board to catch waves and plane through sections with ease.

Mama Chyari (Mama Bicycle)

Just about everyone in Japan has a bicycle and the Mama Chyari is the bike of choice
Mama is for mother and Chyari is bicycle...but dont let the name full you. Most everyone kids, and dads use this bike to get around town... its one of the easiest bicycles to ride.
Masa comes to the store every twice a year, He works on a Maguro boat that travels between Japan and Hawaii catching Maguro. He brought a Mama Chyari for Keiko because she mentioned that Hawaii does not have Mama Chyari and she wished that we could get one, but its way to expensive to have it shipped over, so he brought one over as an "Omiyage" via his Maugugo ship.
Check out this link for a new type of Mama Chayri (hopefully it wont be all grabled its in Japanese) The middle bar is very low for easy entry and exit off the bike, light come on with one very easy touch, very easy chaning of gears...Japan really reasearch things to make it user friendly.

Surf Swap Meet and Sample Sale

Hawaiian South Shore’s 2nd annual Swap Meet and Sample Sale

Our 2nd annual swap meet and sample sale was a huge success today. There were a few hundred shoppers that showed up to take advantage of this event. What a great way to get some Christmas shopping done! I mean I saw some Oneill Superfreak board shorts
for $30 (they cost $75 in stores) and brand new surfboards for $250! Everything was a good deal today, even the Rainbows plate lunches was cheap!

There was a raffle to give away Bruce Irons personal board that he signed. We also gave away a bunch of prizes provided by JS Surfboards and Globe.

Everyone that showed up and took advantage of this event went home happy either with product for themselves or gifts for their friends and family.

If you missed this event you really missed out. But no worry we will be having another in the summer of 2009 or sooner.

Thanks to all who participated in this event and especially the individual sellers and surf companies.

Surf Trip Tahiti

I just got back from Tahiti a few days ago and was so stoked to get some really good waves. It was nice to meet up with some friends and experience the Tahitian hospitality again. I would guess Tahiti is like what Hawaii was like a 100 years ago, there's so much aloha and everything revolves around family and friends.

We spent the first night on Tahiti at Ralph's place The Taaroa Lodge and I would recommend it for a economical place to stay. Super comfortable and affordable.

The next day it was straight to the boat harbor to catch the ferry to Moorea where we would stay for the week. If you want to unplug and relax Moorea is the place to go. It's such a beautiful island with good waves and friendly people.

We stayed at our good friend Yvan's place who always hooks us up. 2 bedroom bungalow right on the beach with our own boat to use.
If you are looking for a place to stay try the Haapiti Surf Lodge. You can contact Petero directly to reserve a bungalow.

Above is a view from the lagoon looking back at our bungalow on Moorea. The water is crystal clear, looks like a swimming pool.

Above is the view from our back porch. We had our own boats to get us out to the surf.

There are other things to do on Moorea. We had 2 days when the waves were to big and stormy so we went to feed the sting rays and swim with the sharks. That's the closest I've been to a shark... that I know of.

Of course there were the parties that seemed to go on every night. I never drank so much Hinano's in my life.

It was a fun trip but like all surf trips way to short. I'm back and trying to adjust to the fast pace and crowded line ups here.... Bummas.

Island Snow

As you may have heard another local retailer is going to close down soon. Island Snow has been in business for 30 years and is closing down its Ala Moana and Waikiki stores at the end of the month.
I recently talked to the owner James and he said it was just time for him to move out of the retail business and retire. He plans on spending more time with his family, relax and paddle his brand new one man canoe.
I've known James for a long time, even worked for him for 8 years and I was stoked to hear he was taking time out to enjoy life. If anyone deserves it he does for sure.

There's a big mainland chain store coming to Hawaii that will take over the Waikiki location and as part of the deal they are going to retain most of the original staff.

Is this the future of our locally owned retail stores? Being replaced by bigger mainland chains? I hope not. Support local businesses!!!

Everyone meet Kuro. He is half miniature Daschund and half Japanese-chin. In this current picture he is now 11 weeks old. There is a store in Kahala called Petland and they have a puppy swap meet every Sunday. That is where I met Kuro's breeder. It's really great because they are all local breeder's and you can get to talk to them and get all the information on the dog you are interested in. This is my first dog since I've moved out on my own and its been really fun. He gets his third vaccination shot tomorrow so I'll start bring him around.

Resin8 Surfboards

We have just worked out a deal with Resin8 Surfboards to be the first to get the Wade Tokoro models as soon as they arrive in Hawaii. I'm pretty stoked to be getting some of Wade's boards in the shop. I have ridden his boards for years and they work unreal and now to get them in a super durable construction that lasts is even better.

Bustin Down The Door

I was lucky... I was able to check out the premier on wed July 30th with a couple a friends. The movie is very good you have to check it out its playing at the Dole Cinema right now...I didn't realize that these guys played such a heavy role in making what the surfing pros are today...there were no Surfing pros back then and they pretty much invented the term and occupation...

After the movie we all went to Sam Choys for an after party and we had a chance to talk to Shaun Thompson....I had to ask... what do you ride now on a regular basis.... and at 6'2" 190LBS AND 55YO he rides a 6'3" x 18 1/2" x 2 3/8!!!! What!!! A lot of guys half his age are riding that!! Said he was in South Africa not to long ago with perfect 6' - 8' and surfed for 8hours without going in for a break!!!! Thats some strength and endurance....

Meeting Todd Bradley

I've been noticing more people in the lineup recently and its starting to become dangerous. Most of us know the rules or etiquette in surfing but there are a few that might not be familiar with it.
I've listed some general rules of surfing that I hope those of you who were never taught can learn something by reading this and keep the line up safe.

Pick the right surfing spots for your ability and attitude.

We need to be honest with ourselves about our ability, and our intentions. We also need to recognize that some surf zones are not suited for all surfers. It's important for all of us to recognize that by charging into a lineup for which we're not suited, we're likely to be frustrated and disrupt others' surfing enjoyment.

Don't drop in on or snake your fellow surfer.

In other words, do not catch a wave once another surfer has claimed it by being in a deeper or more effective position at takeoff.

When paddling out to or within a break, it's your responsibility to stay out of the way of riders on waves.

This has its roots in the same thinking behind "don't drop in" - once a rider has selected and caught a wave, all other surfers should do their best not to interfere with his or her enjoyment of the wave. It's also extremely practical.

Let's face it: Few moves make less sense than paddling close to, or directly into, the breaking line of waves on the way to the takeoff zone. For one thing, natural waterflow through the lineup will make the trip a lot easier if you paddle clear and in open water. For another, not all surfers in the water will have the skills or inclination to avoid your prone board and body floating up into their paths. Therefore, always paddle out wide of the break, making sure you're not interfering with your fellow surfers' waves.

If you find yourself caught inside the whitewater line, don't cut across riders' tracks in a frantic attempt to reach the shoulder; maintain your position, pushing through the whitewater until the set passes, then go wide again into open water as quickly as possible. Paddling into the path of a surfer in the tube in order to save yourself a duckdive is extremely bad etiquette.

Never block a fellow surfer's path into a wave by paddling beneath his or her entry line. Doing so - whether or not you believe the surfer is capable of catching the wave- is a gross breach of etiquette, and if the surfer does in fact take off, you will be exposed to potential injury, or at the very least a wipeout for which you will receive little sympathy.

Always aid another surfer in trouble.

But don't put yourself in a situation over your head. Two surfers in need of help are in a much worse a state than one. This means we have only one real safety net in times of danger: each other. The physical safety of your fellow surfer should be a paramount concern, overriding any disputes or bad feelings that may already have occurred between you.

Respect the locals

The term 'local' has nothing to do with where a surfer's home is located, yet everything to do with his or her long-term history at a particular surf location.

When surfing a new spot for the first time don't travel in large numbers. Consider the likely impact of your arrival at a spot. Five or six surfers all showing up together and charging out into surf where only a few people are riding ... this will change everything about the session. If you're traveling in such numbers to a new spot, be sensitive to the numbers in the water. Again, take your time - the surfers already out will eventually come in and make room for you. A good rule of thumb, if there are a few guys out: avoid increasing the numbers in the water by more than 25%.

Let the locals set the pace. How do things work in this new lineup? While almost all the world's surf spots are run by similar basic rules, there are a hundred localized versions of surfing etiquette. Fit into the regular surfers' rhythm, catching the waves they give to you and giving them all the room they require. As you do so, watch closely for possible variations on the basic lineup codes, and take your cues from the local surfers' actions. This may take more than one session to achieve.

Do not try to outsurf the locals. It doesn't matter if they seem less skilled or sharp than you and your friends. Try to take over the waves at that spot, and a local (or more than one) will almost certainly use his or her superior knowledge of the spot to confuse and frustrate you. Keep trying, and you're likely to ruin everyone's enjoyment of the session. Instead, again, take a back seat and let the local surfers dictate the pace of your surf, until they're confident enough of your intentions to give you a couple of set waves.

At all times, be responsible for your equipment and respectful of others'.

First and simplest to recall: never let your surfboard go. Throwing your board and relying on your leash to get through a closeout or broken wave's whitewater is a very bad call in all but the least crowded and most critical of circumstances. Any other surfer within 10 or even more yards, particularly behind you, is immediately placed in serious danger; and there's a chance the leash may break or otherwise unattach itself, in which case your board's a loose cannon. This especially applies to riders of thick, heavy equipment, such as traditional longboards, stand up paddle boards and some bigger-wave guns. You should consider the possibility that if you can't negotiate a surf spot without throwing your board away, the spot may not be for you.

A couple of months ago I got a new short board for the summer. I'm a girl and we all know that girls like to make cutesy when it comes down to the colors. Whether It'd be with the color of the board, deck pad or even down to the leash. I've had past experiences where I'd have a hard time selling my boards because I'd make them all girlie and only guys liked the dimensions but not so much the color. So this time I didn't get any color. That didn't last for long. I had my very talented friend Randy draw a koi and some flowers on my board. All it takes is some posca pens, clear coat spray paint and a little talent. Even if you don't draw good you can
always just doodle. Here's a few examples along with the work Randy did. Nice yah!

HSS Team Updates

Heres some HSS team rider updates:

Kylen Yamakawa just won this years jr. mens division of the HSA state championships held in good waves at Bowls. He was also just picked up by Oneill.

Yukko has just returned from Japan where she just turned pro and competed on the JPSA womens tour. Currently she is rated 17th and needs to finish the season in 16th to get a better seed for next year. There are 2 more contests remaining for this years tour so hopefully she can do well in both of them and finish in the top 16.

Kelly Slater wins again...

Kelly Slater won the Globe Pro Fiji earlier this week in 4-6' bumpy Cloudbreak. For those of you that didnt get to watch the live webcast, Kelly dominated the final against CJ Hobgood. CJ seemed to be out of rhythm and couldnt get the waves to score him the points he needed to catch Slater.

Kelly is in the lead for the ratings race and Parko is second. The next stop is J-Bay July 10-20 an event that Slater always does well in. If he wins J-Bay it will hard for anyone to catch him.

Stand Up Paddle-One Stop Shop

I got my first stand up paddle board a year ago from HSS. Keith ordered my 9'0 bat tail from c4. In just one year it seems like the whole sport has just taken off and has become more defined. There is more equipment available in the stores. People who were just paddling around the lagoon are starting to come out to
the line up and the pro's are just taking the sport to the extremes.
I have come to realize that my favorite part about working at Hawaiian South Shore is helping people new to the sport find the right equipment to get going. We have pretty much everything you need from boards, paddles, deck pads, board bags, dvds, and more.

SOUTH WINDS = PORTUGUESE MAN OF WAR

The last couple of weeks we've been having a lot of south winds and vog. Unfortunately vog isn't the only thing that south winds bring. There were a few portuguese man of war sightings. On friday I got stung by the only one I saw all day. Lucky me. Here's a picture of what a sting might look like.
The symptoms are stinging, burning, redness, swelling of lymph nodes (long welt lines). Severe reactions are difficulty breathing and cardiac arrest. Here are a few tips if you or a friend ever get stung.

IMMEDIATE FIRST AID ADVICE:

1. Rinse the area w/seawater or fresh water to remove any tentacles stuck to the skin.
2. For severe pain, try applying heat or cold, whichever feels better to the victim.
3. Few portuguese man of war stings in hawaii are life threatening, but its always a possibility. Some people are sensitive to the venom and some may have an allergic reaction. If you have difficulty breathing or an altered level of consciousness seek medical assistance.

AFTER MATH FIRST AID ADVICE:

-For persistent itching or skin rash, try hydrocortisone ointment four times a day, and or two 25 milligram of Benadryl tablets every 6 hours.

NOTE- A study shows that vinegar in these stings sometimes makes the sting worse. Portuguese man of wars belong to a different family than box jelly fish and therefore must be treated separately.

Bra Boys When???

A lot of you must be wondering when in the heck is the Bra Boys dvd coming out? Well I just got word today that it will be released June 15th. Although I wouldnt hold my breath on that date. You see they (the producers) been pushing the release date back since April. I guess its doing better than expected in theaters so the producers dont want to release it while its playing in theaters, which makes sense and which also makes me think its probably pretty good and worth the wait.
Any one see it while it played here at Regals Theaters? What you think?

Making time to surf!

Seems like life is filled with so many things to do but so little time. Although there is one thing that us surfers always make time for SURFING!!! This morning I decided to go out before work since I heard that there was a little south swell on the rise. I knew it would still be pretty small but I didn't care. I needed to short board.
I didn't even sit and watch the wave before I paddled out. I just waxed my board put on a hat and went. While I was paddling out I was getting a little worried because I wasn't wearing a leash and there were some waves coming through. I reached the line up and caught a few being picky with my waves because I didn't want to lose my board since the tide was in the negatives. I told Dave I should have brought my leash and he told me I could use his. He's so awesome!!! I could finally go for the waves I wanted.
The conditions were good and it seems like the waves are coming up so make some time for yourself and go surf.

WCT Webcasts

Looked at the waves in town this morning..flat and onshore only a few SUP guys out.

Isnt it amazing how technology keeps advancing. I'd say not even 10 years ago if you wanted to see coverage and/or find results from the last WCT contest you would have to wait till Surfer Mag hit the shelves. A few years ago there was this thing called the live webcast which wasnt that new to the media world but for us surfers it was a gift from god. It started with a few select events on the WCT tour with marginal video quality but it was good enough. Good enough for me that I would sit for hours staring at my computer screen trying to make out who was who in a heat. How far we've come. Now all the WCT events are broadcast live around the world. The video quality is a hundred times better than before and the live scores , several camera angles, instant replays, and insightful commentating make it way more exciting and entertaining to watch.
Now the question is how long do you think these free webcasts will continue to be free?

Billabong Pro Tahiti started today, watched the first few heats this morning before work and watched some of the later heats at work. Kelly Slater Vs. Jamie Obrien was a good heat. Thought Jamie was going to win the heat but Slater just dominated (no wonder he's 8x world champ). Waves definitely got bigger as the day went on looked 6' pretty solid in the afternoon. They ran some of rd 2 and should be finishing up that round tomorrow. Still got some good heats to watch if you can.
